Equal Rights, Gay Marriage, Obama
We all are hoping that Obama will live up to the hype of being the most gay friendly President ever. He's been giving us (the gays) 'shout outs' quite often and has even spoken out saying that equal rights are due. However, if you recall, last year I remember seeing him state that he is against gay marriage. That comment kind of hurt. But, you have to remember that he wanted to get elected. He needed those narrow-minded Christian freaks to vote for him as well as the gay community. If you listened to his reasoning carefully, you heard that he supported a civil union that comes with ALL THE SAME RIGHTS as marriage. Sounds good to me.
Now that Obama is getting ready to get sworn in, an interesting piece of news has surfaced. Back in 1996, when Obama was running for his Illinois Senate seat, he wrote in a questionnaire to a local gay newspaper that he supported "legalizing same-sex marriages and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages". The typed letter was signed by Mr. Obama and presented to Outlines (a gay newspaper in Illinois). Sounds a lot like he may be the only President that will fight for our equal rights. That's actually good news.
With all that said....we still have to remember...we cannot just hope President Obama will move this effort forward. We need to push and push, so that we are not forgotten with all of the mess we are in. Sure the economy is in the toilet now...but I'm sure that he can multi-task.
